Kodiak 9/15 - 04
After the bears left Sargent Creek, we drove the short distance down the road to the Russian River crossing. Surprisingly, we find another sow with 3 cubs (and more people watching them). These bears were on the river directly around the bridge giving us a very close view with a nice elevation difference providing a layer of safety. The sky was still overcast and lighting was poor forcing me into high ISO and shutter speeds lower than I wished for the lens I was using so please pardon a little blur.
This cub was scavenging the shore and you see a fresh carcass to the left. I chose this photo for the front paw and pad (plus fresh fish). Though a cub, this is a BIG animal with powerful muscles attached to large claws! The sow classifies as HUGE! I believe these cubs (as the first set at Sargent) are second year.
The cub decided to cross the river to be closer to mom. Again, I always like feet detail when I can get it. You also see the typical water clarity of a mountain creek in this photo.
Bears are agile swimmers though this crossing wasn't particularly deep.
