Talkeetna to Denali

This is the VRBO we stayed at just outside of Talkeetna. We stayed at VRBOs for all of our vacation on the mainland. This was easily the best in location and style. The others were townhomes in the city - typically a basement apartment with owners above. OK but not quaint. I will get into Talkeetna activities in a future post. From Talkeetna, we drove North next to Denali National Park on our way to Fairbanks. It was a drippy, overcast day so we never actually saw Denali Mountain. The drive was pretty but the low sky limited visibility. We were expecting a drive similar to a Rocky Mountain drive where there would be designated pull-offs to take in the views. That was not the case! Tall trees and vegetation lined the roads with very few glimpses of the surrounding mountains. There were a couple of pull-offs but the view was not great even if the weather had been better. The second photo was not a pull-off - rather it was me walking back across a bridge over a very deep gully while keeping an eye out for traffic (mostly trucks and tour buses). The third photo is at the "official" pull-off to see Denali peak. Yep, that peak is back there somewhere behind the clouds! Again, the view was in the far distance in the best of cases. The last photo is the advertised view. Oh well, Denali viewing was a bit of a bust but was not a primary goal of the trip.
