Hidden River Cave - 03
A couple more photos. The first is a view down to the river just past the bridge seen yesterday. The river was flowing but not a lot. During some of the heavy KY/TN floods the past years, the river was higher than where we are standing - nearly filling much of the void! Nature's forces are hard to imagine some times. One of the reasons for very little light in the cave is seen in the lower right of this photo. The artificial light is enough to grow a non-native green algae. The cave association is working to find safe remedies for such problems. We saw this problem in a several locations. Also seen at the top of the first photo are some small stalactites. The normal flow of the river will reach this height and prevents long term growth any lower on the wall. The second photo is a vertical wall showing the fracture of the rocks that created this cave. The fallen rock is eroded by the river and leaves this space.
